Charles Joguet, Chinon Varennes du Grand Clos, 2019

From the legendary Charles Joguet domaine, Varennes du Grand Clos is a 4-hectare vineyard in Sazilly extending from the Clos de la Dioterie, planted between 1962 and 1976 at the foot of a gravelly terrace formed by erosion of the limestone hillside. The terroir features siliceous-clay and silico-limestone soils on the left bank of the Vienne River. Certified organic, cold pre-fermentation maceration for 10 days, minimum 4-week vatting below 21C with frequent pumping-over and punching-down. Free-run and press wines blended for malolactic in barrels, then 15-16 months in partially renewed French oak, followed by 6 months in vat. Classified as a "Vin de Grande Garde"—wine for long aging. Offers finesse and complexity with the elegance characteristic of Sazilly terroir.
