Calon-Segur is the famous 'wine with a heart,' so named because the 18th-century Marquis de Segur, who also owned Lafite and Latour, declared that his heart belonged to Calon. It's a Third Growth from Saint-Estephe, the northernmost and most structured of the Medoc's great communes. The 2005 is among the best vintages the estate has ever made, a Cabernet-led blend (about 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot) that was broad-shouldered and broodingly tannic in youth. Now it's reaching a beautiful place, with the woodsmoke, leather and mineral character that defines mature Saint-Estephe. Decant it well, or keep cellaring; this has years left.
