Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Hermitage Blanc, 2021

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Hermitage Blanc, 2021

One of the world's greatest white wines, full stop. The Chave family has been making wine since 1481, sixteen generations of vignerons père en fils, originally in Saint-Joseph before buying land on the hill of Hermitage from 1865. Jean-Louis Chave's Hermitage Blanc is roughly 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne drawn from the family's oldest estate parcels: Les Rocoules, Maison Blanche, Péléat, and l'Hermite, with many vines well over 60 years old. The 2021 vintage is classical, cool, and tightly wound: fermented entirely in oak barrel, then aged roughly 30 months in barrique. Layers of quince, beeswax, acacia, smoked herb, and toasted hazelnut unfold over a granite-driven core. Built to drink now with air, or to cellar for decades. A reference-point bottle.
