Chateau Gloria, Saint Julien, 2015
A wine that drinks like a classified growth because it's built from them. Henri Martin started Gloria from scratch in 1942, assembling it parcel by parcel almost entirely from vineyards of 1855 classified estates in Saint-Julien and Pauillac. The 1855 list simply predates the estate, so despite carrying no classification, Gloria drinks well above its station. The 2015 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, from a warm, generous vintage that gave broad, giving wines with polished tannins. Now run by Martin's family alongside their classified Chateau Saint-Pierre, this is elegant, ageworthy Saint-Julien. Drinking well now and through the late 2030s.
