Clos des Breteches, Bois Renault, 2024
A brand-new piece of ground from a brand-new estate that people are already fighting over. Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas founded Clos des Brétèches in 2021 in Anjou Noir, at Grand Bonnezeaux, under the wing of Mark Angeli — and in a handful of vintages they've gone from unknown to allocated. They farm 2.6 hectares organically, plow with horses rather than tractors, pick by hand and press in a manual vertical press, then age the Chenin Blanc a year on its lees in barrel with no fining, no filtration and nothing added. Bois Renault comes from the same vineyard as Les Pélioches, but from vines on a mix of colluvium and spilite — newer ground for them, and a different read on the same grape. Those volcanic, silica-rich soils are what give these wines their density and their salty, vertical drive. Tiny production, and worth the hunt.
