Clos des Breteches, Les Pelioches, 2024
The richest, most generous Chenin in a lineup that is already hard to get. Les Pélioches is a single 1.4-hectare plot of roughly 40-year-old Chenin Blanc grown on spilite, the volcanic rock that defines Anjou Noir, and it's the most gourmand cuvée in the Clos des Brétèches range. Mélanie Grenouilleau and Romain Nicolas started the estate in 2021 with 1.2 hectares taken over from Domaine Deboutbertin, under the guidance of Mark Angeli, and even now work only 2.6 hectares in total — which tells you how little of this exists anywhere. The farming is organic and old-fashioned in the best way: horses instead of tractors, hand harvest, a manual vertical press. The wine spends a year on its lees in barrel and goes into bottle with nothing added and nothing stripped out. Rounder and more open than its siblings, but with the same saline, mineral spine holding it upright.
