Domaine Zafeirakis, Malagousia Microcosmos, 2024
Malagousia was nearly extinct a few decades ago, and Malagousia was rescued from near-extinction by Vangelis Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Logothetis; Zafeirakis is instead known for reviving the red grape Limniona and championing Malagousia in Tyrnavos. Microcosmos is his single-vineyard expression from old vines on flinty clay soils in Tyrnavos, in the heart of Thessaly, farmed organically and made without oak to keep everything vivid. This is a revival grape (rescued by Gerovassiliou) in the hands of a family that has championed it in Tyrnavos, and it drinks like it: floral, saline and alive. If you've never had a great Greek white, this is a beautiful place to fall in.
