Rodica, Refosk, 2023

Refošk (the Slovenian name for Refosco) is one of those grapes that, in the right hands, tastes like nowhere else — deep purple, brisk-acid, savory and inky in a way that only the Adriatic-facing limestone of Istria can really pull off. The Rodica family farms 15 organic-certified hectares high above the Gulf of Trieste in the village of Truške, near Marezige, where Marinko Rodica traded his career as a car mechanic for a life in the vines back in 1998. Now fully organic in both grape and wine, the estate works mostly with indigenous varieties, and this Refošk is the calling card: hand-farmed fruit, gentle winemaking, no oak interference. Expect crunchy dark cherry, blueberry skin, sea-spray salinity, and the variety's signature crackling acidity. Pair it with anything off a wood fire and prepare to fall in love with Slovenian Istria.
